Some tips and ideas for planting lily bulbs for summer...
 

Despite the wintry weather outside it is time to start looking ahead to summer for your garden, as now is the right time to plant summer flowering bulbs, such as lilies. Lilies have a gorgeous scent and make a colourful addition to any garden, and moreover they are easy to grow in pots. The best time to plant them is February to April for them to bloom in the summer months. There are literally hundreds of colours and varieties to choose from, so pick some bright colours that will work with your garden, or mix and match for a dramatic effect. Once they are grown and ready for display, the potted lilies can be kept in warm spots on patios, decked areas or pathways, or placed in borders and flower beds to fill in gaps.

Below are some step by step tips on how to pot up your lily bulbs. Follow these and see how easy it is to do, and come summer enjoy the wonderful colour and scent produced by these versatile bulb flowers.

• Fill your pot with compost so that it is half full
• Add five or six lily bulbs, making sure they are the right way up with the roots pointing downwards
• Make sure the bulbs are not touching each other, or the edges of the pot
• Cover them with compost and fill up the rest of the pot
• Whilst they are sprouting they need to be kept in a greenhouse or a sheltered spot
• Move into a sunny spot for full effect when they flower
