Crocosmia 'lucifer' crowned winner of 2010 summer bulb of the year

CROCOSMIA ‘LUCIFER’ CROWNED WINNER OF 2010
Summer Flowering Bulb of the Year

The Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’ has been crowned the 2010 Summer Bulb of the Year. At the event hosted by The Netherlands Flower Bulb Information Centre, a select panel of industry professionals and leading gardening journalists voted it as this years “must have” bulb, to plant this spring for flowering in Summer 2010. The Bulb of the Year is elected every year and all contenders are judged on the strength of their versatility, appearance and ease of growing.

Crocosmia grow very upright and to a height of about 1m, producing clumps of dense iris like foliage along bronze green arching stems. Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’ is aptly named as its flowers are a searing shade of paprika red. One of the small flowering varieties, it is hardier than other Crocosmia, making it the perfect flower for beginners and for gardens in cooler regions of the UK. Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’ is best suited to full sunshine or partial shade making it ideal for borders where its height can complement smaller flowers. Elsewhere in the garden, it creates structure and a burst of bright colour when it flowers between June and the end of August. Why not plant Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’ as part of a ‘hot’ colour scheme for full impact and in bold drifts to make the most of its dramatic form. Crocosmia also make excellent cut flowers so why not bring them indoors too.
Be sure to plant Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’ now, in time for summer blooming!
