A spring bouquet you make now!

 
 
Imagine a profusion of snowdrops. This abundance of spring flowers will later be heralding the new season once again. But even now, spring flowers are in plentiful supply in florists’ shops and markets. And this gives you the chance to hurry the season along a bit by bringing springtime inside. Bulb flowers are the perfect harbingers of spring. After all, they’re the first to reintroduce the colours of nature after the long drab winter. You could even think of them as the flowers of new life.
 

Light colours announce the coming of spring

Light colours such as white, cream and yellow are the primary colours of spring. The same colours you find in such flowers as narcissi that lend themselves so perfectly for use in bouquets. A bouquet consisting of narcissi alone will stay fresh and beautiful. You might want to combine more than one variety in a single vase. Try mixing a narcissus variety with a large cup and a small-cupped variety that has several flowers on a single stem so that the soft colours reinforce one another. By arranging the flowers loosely, the result is a beautiful open haze of light colours.

Tulip tips

Besides narcissi, there are many, many varieties of tulips in bright colours such as white, yellow, pink and lilac that can be used in both nostalgic and contemporary arrangements. Arranging the tulips at the same height in a vase produces a nostalgic bouquet. To keep the tulips standing up nice and straight in the vase for a longer length of time, it is advisable to "pre-stretch" the tulips by wrapping them in a newspaper and setting them in water for the first 24 hours. But even when tulips hang over the sides of a vase, they have a special lush beauty about them that’s all their own.

Another way to use tulips is to place them in a shallow container. These tulips are usually not sold in a bunch but in small containers with soil. By removing the tulip from its container and rinsing off the soil, the entire plant - the tulip bulb with its leaves and flower – is available for use in a bouquet. As a basis, the container or vase can have a highly contrasting colour and be made of a transparent material. Such a combination will produce a creation that has a different and surprising look from each vantage point.

All that’s needed to keep the tulip fresh is a splash of water at the bottom of the container.
